TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of oncology nurses, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists involved in the treatment of breast cancer.

PURPOSE STATEMENT
By providing information on the latest research developments in the context of expert perspectives, this NCPD activity will assist oncology nurses, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists with the formulation of state-of-the-art clinical management strategies to facilitate optimal care of patients with breast cancer.

DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOME
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to self-report understanding of the logistical and practical requirements associated with novel therapies targeting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in HR-positive metastatic breast cancer in order to educate, counsel and assist patients and their families in decision-making.

At the end of the activity, learners will also be able to

• Review available research documenting the correlation between various biomarkers, such as PIK3CA/AKT1/PTEN alterations and ESR1 mutations, and response to specific therapies, and understand optimal testing algorithms for patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive metastatic breast cancer (mBC).
• Recognize the frequency of PIK3CA/AKT1/PTEN alterations in HR-positive mBC, and educate patients with newly diagnosed and relapsed/refractory disease about evidence-based approaches to targeting these aberrations.
• Understand the biological rationale for the development of agents targeting multiple components of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, and recognize available and anticipated data with this strategy for patients with HR-positive, PIK3CA wild-type and PIK3CA-mutant mBC.
• Assess the spectrum, frequency and severity of adverse events associated with available and emerging agents targeting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, and consider recommended approaches to prevent, ameliorate and manage these side effects.
• Recall the design of ongoing clinical trials evaluating novel agents targeting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, and counsel appropriate patients with HR-positive mBC about availability and participation.

ACCREDITATION STATEMENT
Research To Practice (RTP) is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation.

CREDIT DESIGNATION STATEMENT
This educational activity for 1.5 contact hours is provided by RTP during the period of July 21, 2026, to July 21, 2027.
